In Australia Government Jobs are keenly looked for by workers because they offer a lot more job security than jobs in the private sector and also a vast array of different positions for advancement within the Government.
Many graduate students use Government Jobs as a stepping stone into private enterprise by gaining valuable experience that they may not be able to get in the private sector through lack of experience. Working for the Government is a great place to start ones employment history because there is a lot of room to progress within the organization. There are two different types of Government Jobs, those in the Federal Government and jobs within Local Government. Federal Government jobs and State or Local Government jobs come under different awards and pay structures. They are completely independent of each other, workers in these positions are referred to as Public Servants. Public Servants are there to serve the Public.
The Government is an equal opportunity employer, which means nobody will be discriminated against based on their race, sex or religion.
In recent times the Government has outsourced a lot of the work which they do to cut costs and have even sold some well known Government Institutions such as the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Telstra to the private sector.
Both of these corporate entities were listed on the Australian stock exchange with the opportunity given to every Australian to enter the sharemarket and buy shares in these two companies if they so wished.
Although Governments have cut a lot of the services that they previously provided to the public, there are still thousands of Government Jobs out there that the Government of the day will always run. Examples of these jobs include the Police Force or the Armed Services such as Army or Navy.
Governments will now automatically do criminal checks on potential employees too to check if they have any serious convictions against them before employing them.
Most Governments jobs are advertised on government web sites. Examples of state governments who advertise these positions on their own government web site include the NSW Government and Victorian Government. So if you were looking for a position within the Public Service, this would be a good place to start.
In summary, if you’re on the job trail then a Government job would be a great start to any career for a school leaver or graduate. The room for advancement within the government is a big incentive to improve ones qualifications.
Job security is also another big plus in working for the Government because you won't get retrenched because the company becomes insolvent and if they do find that your position becomes obsolete they will move you to another position (same pay rate) within the organization. All of the above reasons make taking up a position in the Government very appealing.
