    What you should have

    If you want to engage in emergency medical dispatcher jobs, you must have completed an apprenticeship or training in emergency medical dispatcher jobs. To qualify for the apprenticeship or training, you must be at least 18 years old. A first aid certificate is an advantage.

    Like most emergency services jobs, emergency medical dispatcher jobs require fast and accurate response to he emergency cases. You must have excellent communication and active listening skills. You must also demonstrate proficiency in fast and accurate typing and computer use. Knowledge of switchboard operations, radio communications and other equipment is an advantage.

    The ability to manage stressful situations calmly is important. Leadership skills are also necessary. Knowledge of medical terminologies is very useful. You must also be able to make accurate judgement calls and be able to defend your decisions. The ability to work as part of a team is essential.
