Mobilecrane Operator Jobs

Look at the high rise buildings around. Mobilecrane operators have helped get them off the ground!

Crane operator jobs involve operation and maintenance of stationary or mobile cranes to lift, shift, move or position materials or equipment. Crane operators use different types of cranes depending on the task at hand. On construction of skyscrapers and apartment buildings, crane operators use stationary tower cranes. On building sites where there's restriction in space, mobilecranes are used.

On the job

Building jobs need the services of mobilecrane operators. Mobilecrane operators may operate cranes that are mounted on trucks.

Mobilecrane operator jobs include doing the following tasks:

• inspect the crane's controls, gauges and instruments
• check the ground condition of the work site before setting up and positioning the crane
• check that the crane is set up correctly and secure
• drive mobilecranes to and from work sites
• identify, control or avoid any hazard in lifting or shifting of objects in the work site
• accurately calculate the safe lifting capacity of the crane
• understand and follow signals and instructions of the "doggers" who direct the the moving and positioning of the objects
• make sure that the crane is always in good condition.

What you should have

If you want to secure building jobs like crane operating, you must be at least 18 years old. Mobilecrane operator jobs need people who have Class 4 heavy vehicle licence. Some employers require a Certificate of Competency in crane operating. You can gain such certification if you're at least 21 years old. If you really want to enter the field of crane operation, you could take a Transport and Distribution (Mobile Craen Operations - Level 3) traineeship.

Mobilecrane operator jobs require that you are physically fit to do the specialised task of operating mobile cranes. Knowledge of safety regulations on crane operation may help. Ability to identify and interpret hand signals may be useful.
