Landscape architecture jobs require landscape architects to perform the following tasks:

• discuss with the client, architect, and engineer planning and design concerns of landscape areas
• visit and study the site to be developed, chart the placement of utility lines, and check details such as soil and exposure to elements
• perform topographic surveys and prepare maps and chart the positions of the existing buildings, trees and roads
• use computer-assisted design (CAD) in preparation of maps, photographs, sketches and reports to be presented to the client
• prepare detailed drawings of specific features and location such as roads, walks, trees and shrubbery
• make recommendations on the proper use of land and cost estimates
• work closely with contractors
• monitor the progress of the landscaping project
• address landscape problems concerning environmental planning.

What you should have

Landscape architecture jobs like some building jobs, however, require other qualifications aside from creativity and design skills. You must have a degree in landscape architecture to enter this field. Some employers require applicants to submit a portfolio of their work.

Landscape architecture jobs need people who have technical drawing, designing, and planning talent and skills. You must have in depth knowledge of design principles, kinds of plants, types of soils, and climate factors that play significant roles in the success of your landscaping project. Knowledge of different construction and building methods, materials, and policies may be useful.
