                Foreman or Foreperson Jobs

                Are you a skilled worker? Do you have people skills? Do you have leadership skills? If your answer to all the questions is yes, then you might have a future in foreman or foreperson jobs.

                In building and constructions, a foreman or a foreperson's job constitutes all aspects related to personnel management on site. A foreman or a foreperson makes important decisions that could affect the personnel's daily production.

                On the job

                Labourers who have intensive and extensive experience in a particular trade are employed in foreman or foreperson jobs. As one of building jobs supervisory positions, the foreman or foreperson is in charged with organising the overall building and construction project.

                Foreman's tasks and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

                • pre-plan work for crew
                • schedule, coordinate, and supervise work process on site
                • provide venue for apprenticeship and training opportunities to craftspersons
                • request additional manpower should the need arise
                • coordinate with contractors involved in the project
                • consistent and fair application of all labour policies and procedures
                • oversee safety procedures
                • monitor quality of workmanship
                • monitor production costs
                • assess competency and capability of labourers
                • boost the morale and attitude of the crew
                • promote, support and facilitate team work
                • monitor work progress and record it in logs or diaries

                What you should have

                Among building jobs, many engineers say that foreman or foreperson jobs are essential in the successful and immediate completion of the project.

                There is no set educational requirements for foreman foreperson jobs, however, employers prefer that you have at least three years of secondary education. Subjects like English, maths, carpentry and horticulture may help. You must have completed formal supervisory, leadership, and safety training programs. Certificate on basic first aid course might work to your advantage.

                You must have had years of experience as labourer in building and construction industry, and have specialised in particular trade. You must also possess good communication skills. Knowledge on occupational health and safety and environmental policies and procedures are highly desirable. Good organisation and leadership skills are important as well. You must also be fit and healthy for most building jobs are done outdoors.

                Money matters

                Like most building jobs, foreman or foreperson jobs salaries vary depending on experience, level of skills, location of employment, and company one is working for.
