      Facilities management refers to the management of buildings and services used in a building. The responsibilities handled by facilities managers are often divided into two categories. The first category is known as "hard services," which includes the inspection of services such as elevators, air-conditioning, and security. Facilities managers must ensure that hard services are working efficiently, safely, and legally. "Soft services," on the other hand, are services that deal with the cleanliness of the building, as well as the services of contractors (such as construction workers, mechanics, and electricians).

      Responsibilities of a Facilities Manager

      The goal of the facilities manager is to ensure the cleanliness, efficiency, and proper operation of services within a building so that those who use the building can go about their business. Facilities managers are contacted regarding the operation of services within a facility. They are responsible for maintaining the service standards of a company or building. Working closely with suppliers, clients, customers, and maintenance crews, the facilities manager handles the supervision of maintenance projects. Facilities managers must operate according to specification of clients, customers, and contract agreements. These employees must be aware of legal, safely, and health regulations in order to maintain proper services operations and building maintenance.

      Requirements and Qualification

      Facilities managers can be employed in a wide range of positions, from assistant facilities manager to regional facilities manager. This means that requirements and qualification for this job varies depending on the company and position opening. Many employers require a degree in any facilities management related course. Good communication and organizational skills are needed to work with customers and other professionals. Experience and knowledge of buildings, building design, services, layouts, blueprints, and other factors of facility management is a must. Compensation for facilities managers is scaled to the position opening, company, and experience and qualification of the applicant.
