                Demolition Operative Jobs

                Demolition operatives fulfill a number of tasks in the demolition and deconstruction of structures. With the operation of plant machinery, hand tools, and power tools, a demolition operative works as part of a team in the piece-by-piece demolition of a building. A majority of the work done by these employees is on-site work, which means that they have to work in changing weather conditions. Since construction, demolition, and excavation jobs are all considered dangerous jobs, demolition operatives have to follow strict rules and regulations regarding health and safety.

                Responsibilities of a Demolition Operative

                There are three main categories of work within the line of demolition operative. Depending on experience and qualification, employees are placed into any one of the following three categories: preparation, minor demolition, or major demolition. Preparation involves the assembly and placement of safety equipment such as rails, scaffolding, and screens. Also involved in the preparation category is the sorting and clearing of materials and other debris.
                The more intensive demolition operative jobs include minor and major demolition tasks. Minor demolition has to do with the taking down of windows, doorways, roofs, and other structural components that can be taken down with hand or power tools. Major demolition makes use of equipment like plant machinery, heavy drills, and cutters in order to take down heavier components. Demolition operatives in the third category of work also have the task of instructing others with reaards to demolition procedures and safety regulations.

                Becoming a Demolition Operative

                Perhaps the most important requirement for this profession is physical fitness. Strength and dexterity is needed in order to work well with heavy equipment, materials, hand tools and machinery. Communication skills are also needed for teamwork. The ability to work at heights and deal with different weather conditions is also a must. Most employers accept applicants with high school education or less, as long as they are qualified for the job and have some sort of experience with construction or demolition work. Compensation for this position is dependent on the experience and qualification of the applicant, as well as the details of the project.
