CAM Operators Jobs

Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) refers to the use of computer software in the manufacturing process. CAM is usually used in tandem with computer-aided designs (CAD) to manufacture products according to a design created with CAD software. In most cases, computer-aided designs are made by engineers and technicians, then fed into a computer-aided manufacturing system, which completes the manufacturing stage through automation. This process allows for a quick and simple manufacturing procedure that can be highly customized with the use of CAD and CAM together.

Common Tasks of CAM Operators

CAM operators are responsible for understanding the processes, operation, and capabilities of CAM and CAD systems. This allows operators to manipulate such systems to the needs and specifications of the project. CAM operators who work in the building construction line are often contracted to manufacture customized mechanical components to fit the architectural and engineering design of the project. Operators are in charge of meeting the precise specifications and standards of project managers, clients, and other professionals.

Common tasks appointed to CAM operators include:

• Setup and installation of CAM systems and software
• Understanding and interpreting designs into CAM systems
• Adjustments to the machines used for manufacturing
• Reparation and replacement of components when needed
• Quality control of the manufactured product
• At times, CAD skills are needed to make minor changes to designs

Requirements and Qualification

Some employers require at least a high school diploma to be qualified for the position of CAM operator. Knowledge of the industry and the products being manufactured is a must, therefore most companies require CAM operators to have at least one year experience in the field. The ability to work with tools, machinery, and heavy equipment or materials is also required as a CAM operator. Attention to detail is important for quality control and minute adjustment to designs. Compensation for this job depends on qualification, experience, industry, and the job contract.
