Building conservation officers have the important role in the preservation of buildings. Since many buildings can easily last for decades, maintenance is imperative to assure preservation. It is the conservation officer's job to inspect buildings (especially historical buildings) for degradation, and decide whether reparations or other conservation methods are required. These professionals are responsible for keeping buildings - both old and new - in good shape both visually and structurally.
The main responsibility of the job is to inspect, report, and advise on historic buildings to ensure building conservation. For this reason, building conservation officers must be knowledgeable about historic materials, building procedures, and techniques. If, upon survey, an officer decides that a building is in need of conservation, he or she has the task of planning the procedure and finding professionals who can work with the required historical techniques and materials.
Conservation officers often have a network of clients, suppliers, architects, and other professionals in the industry. This network helps in the planning and completion of the officer's job. Because building conservation officers work closely with other professions, they often have to work in tight schedules and budgets. Conservation officers also work closely with organizations and government to create policies and laws that will help in the preservation of historical sites and buildings.
An understanding of planning, architecture, design, historic buildings, and construction methods is very important to this profession. Because of this, most employers seek applicants with a minimum of high school education, and prefer college graduates of varying degrees. Experience is required to work effectively and successfully. Communication and teamwork skills are a must, since building conservation officers have to work closely with clients, architects, and other professionals. Freedom to frequently be working on site is important since officers have to inspect, survey, and supervise preservation. Compensation is based on qualification, experience, and the kind of preservation project.
