Submariners belong to the elite Service of the Navy. Traditionally, only volunteers from within the Navy Fleet were allowed in Submarine Service, but currently, the Navy is recruiting Direct Entry Submariners (DESMs).

DESM is open to experienced sailors and officers who have completed their employment training and served an additional 12 months. DESM jobs include acoustic warfare analyst, communication and information systems sailor, cook, cryptologic systems sailor, marine technician, and steward.

Just like other jobs in the Armed Forces, submariner aspirants must undergo varied tests that include medical, written and aptitude tests, psychological interview, fitness test and an interview with the recruiting officer.

Submariners receive competitive base salary, service allowance, uniform allowance, and submarine allowance.

Defence Reservists

Reservists are volunteers or part-time workers in the Armed Forces who bring with them civilian skills and experience. They undergo Reserve training to be fully-equipped to take on the Armed Forces life.

Defence Reservists provide humanitarian support to the organisation. They serve alongside Armed Forces officers and soldiers in peace missions.

Training for Reservists is based on their employment and the requirements of the Service or category they join. If you are highly skilled, mentally and physically fit and willing to serve your country, then you can be a Reservist.

Reservists earn a tax-free salary that is comparatively high than those offered in the civilian world. You will receive a base salary that increase based on your competency level, rank, and years of service. You will also avail of fringe benefits like medical assistance, house rental and purchase assistance and travel and leave incentives.
